Morgan Harper-Jones was raised by her grandparents in Rochdale and has always had an ancient soul. She and her grandmother would repeatedly listen to Diana Ross and The Supremes, Otis Redding, Patsy Cline and other classic Motown songs in the car. Since Harper-Jones' grandmother listened to the radio while working at her record shop all day, she knew every word to all of these songs.
'Breathe', a quietly humming gem of a song that reluctantly withdraws to find space from an all-encompassing love and echoes the honesty of both Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman, was published as her debut single. When publications like Clash and The Line of Best Fit started highlighting her music, a successful debut EP with the song "Breathe" as its title track followed.
Harper-Jones' upcoming EP, "While You Lay Sound Asleep," expands on these principles as the outcome of this year of introspection. Produced by Luke Smith (Foals, Depeche Mode), it combines the artist's gift for emotional realism with experimental string flourishes and darker excursions. It was recorded with members of the new wave jazz group Ezra Collective. 'Want Me' explores the manner in which we alter ourselves and was co-written with Adele colleague Eg White.
It's the Manchester musician's most exposed writing to date, full of brutally honest songs that touch on obsession, attraction and the harmful behaviors that go along with the territory.
