Gagneux was born in Basel, Switzerland in 1989; both of his parents were musicians, and he began playing the piano at a young age. While growing up, he frequently listened to grindcore, technical, and melodic death metal musicians, and as a teenager, he played in the indie pop group Hellelujah. He founded Birdmask in New York City in 2012 after relocating there.
Zeal and Ardor began as a solo project before Gagneux joined forces with supporting vocalists Marc Obrist and Denis Wagner, guitarist Tiziano Volante, bassist Mia Rafaela Dieu, and drummer Marco Von Allmen in 2016 and grew to a full band. Zeal and Ardor, the band's demo album, was published in 2014. Devil Is Fine, their debut album, was then released in 2016. In 2018, they released Stranger Fruit, their second album, which featured elements of post-black metal, avant-garde metal, Motown music, and blues. They released Wake of a Nation, their debut EP, in 2020.
