One of the most recognizable names on the Jamaican music scene and a major dub musician, Scientist was recognized for his expansive production and mixing methods as well as his eccentric album titles and cover art. In the LPs of Scientist, he may be seen utilizing his abilities at the mixing desk to take on monsters, legendary bad guys and video game characters. Overton Brown was born in Kingston, Jamaica. Producer/performer Errol "Don" Mais first identified and nurtured Brown's great skills when he was just 16 years old.
His father, a TV repairman, taught the scientist the fundamentals of electronics, which helped him become highly popular with mobile DJs and their occasionally malfunctioning sound equipment.
Soon Scientist was repairing transformers and televisions for King Tubby's. After a lively discussion about record mixing one day, Tubby issued a remixing record challenge to Scientist. He accepted Tubby's challenge with the typical adolescent bravado, which resulted in a lengthy apprenticeship in dub experimentation under Tubby's supervision. The Scientist created his own dub style while working at Tubby's, which is whimsical, extremely psychedelic and full of echo explosions and blasts of feedback. Don Mais heard the Scientist working on the mixing board while visiting Tubby's studio and was immediately drawn to the sound.
