Although both bands were formed around the same time and are excellent representations of the scene's overall sound, Coal Chamber emerged from the Los Angeles alternative metal scene with a sound frequently compared to Korn: heavy, detuned guitars like the murkiest Black Sabbath; grungy, noisy textures like White Zombie or Tool; white-knuckle intensity like Pantera and hardcore punk; and perhaps a few hip-hop-influenced beats like Biohazard.
Coal Chamber was founded by guitarist Miguel "Meegs" Rascon and vocalist/lyricist B. Dez Fafara, who met through a classified post. The two then recruited bassist Rayna Foss and drummer Mike "Mikee" Cox, the latter of whom learned about auditions from Fafara's future wife, who was Rayna's roommate. When it came time to record the follow-up to their highly successful debut, bassist Rayna Foss-Rose had left the group to raise her kid and was replaced by Nadja Peulen. Between the first two albums and her pregnancy, Nadja filled in for Foss-Rose, but she agreed to return as a full-time member for the following album's recording. The same year, Rascon and Fafara got into a fight on stage, which led to the band starting to break apart. The band members revealed that they had formally split up the following year after releasing a remix and rarities collection titled Giving the Devil His Due, with Fafara moving on with his new group, Devildriver, with whom he would later release an album. Coal Chamber reunited for a performance at the Sick New World event in Las Vegas. It was the bands' first performance in eight years.
