The first achievement of American Football came with their self-titled debut when they brought together two reclusive siblings: post-rock and emo. It was a groundbreaking record where the sly musical layers that surrounded the lyrics veiled and muddled their clarity.
American Football raised more concerns than it cared to address, much like Slint's Spiderland, Codeine's The White Birch and Talk Talk's Laughing Stock. However, there was no longer a band there to offer an explanation. The album's three creators, Mike Kinsella, Steve Holmes and Steve Lamos, broke up almost immediately after its release.
American Football came together again after fifteen years. They performed at far larger venues than they did in their first iteration and finished recording their much awaited second album, American Football. Because of this extremely deliberate aesthetic discontinuity, American Football also made fun of LP3's genre as "post-house." In LP3, however, there are odd connections to shoegaze, a real post-house subgenre. The more experimental elements of the original British shoegaze scene were drawn to the circularity and dreamlike quality of house music, especially ambient house and treasured its aural potential. This vibe permeates LP3, most notably on the Slowdive song "I Can't Feel You," which was written in conjunction with Rachel Goswell.
