The music of Julia Jacklin is strongly influenced by the dichotomy of casual crises. The Melbourne-born, Blue Mountains-raised singer/songwriter has established a frightening reputation as a straightforward lyricist since the release of her first album Don't Let the Kids Win. In songs that are stark and raw, free and humorous, she is unafraid to explore the boundaries of intimacy and agency. Pre Pleasure is the sound of Jacklin gradually releasing her hold on listeners after her folky debut Don't Let the Kids Win and the stunning follow-up Crushing made those intentions known.
Pre Pleasure is Jacklin's first album after the massive Crushing global tour. It was written when she returned home and was completed in a frenzied few months of recording in Montreal.
With The Weather Station bassist Ben Whiteley and The National guitarist Will Kidman as part of her Canadian touring band, Pre Pleasure was recorded in Montreal with co-producer Marcus Paquin. Additionally, it debuts the percussionist Laurie Torres, the saxophone Adam Kinner and string arrangements by Arcade Fire's Owen Pallett that were recorded in Prague with a full orchestra.
Pre Pleasure shows Jacklin as her most genuine self; an uncompromising and masterful lyricist who is always willing to mine the depths of her own life experience and unique in translating it into deeply personal, timeless songs.
