Gustaf's live act is quick on its feet, always in change and compulsively dedicated to the people in the room, resulting in a sound that is passionate, androgynous and contagiously danceable. It is inspired by the rhythmic rhythms of ESG, the dopey drawl of Jonathan Richman and the frenzied energy of The Fall.
Gustaf, a band made up of Tine Hill on bass, Vram Kherlopian on guitar, Melissa Lucciola on drums, Tarra Thiessen on percussion and lead vocals, began its start when Thiessen asked Lydia Gammill to drive her van to SXSW. Gammill proposed putting together a band to perform in Thiessen's place when the initial tour was canceled.
In their first two years, they performed hundreds of performances and built a reputation as one of New York's "hardest working...and most consistently fun bands" (Brooklyn Vegan). They started out with only a name and a few t-shirts.
