His senior year, he won the Class 3A State Championship. He was recognized as an all-conference and all-region player while attending Southern Methodist University. The Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year award was also given to him. Together with Jay Sigel and Bobby Jones, Knost is the only player to have won three USGA competitions. At the Walker Cup, he represented the United States. Prior to going professional, he held the top spot in the World Amateur Golf Ranking for five weeks. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews presented Knost with the first-ever Mark H. McCormack Medal.
