The immersive and transformational registers of recorded music serve as Andrew Ashong's guidance as a sound scientist, music archivist and singer-songwriter. The free-spirited Ashong, a Ghanaian-born Londoner, spent years making mixtapes, exploring albums and expanding his musical encyclopaedia. By the time he was in his early teens, he was DJing and developing his grasp of music. He finally built a large home studio and moved to the beat of his creative inspiration. With a preference for polyrhythms, peculiar basslines, modal chord progressions and an ever-expanding range of inspirations from War and Jorge Ben to Labi Siffre, he is creating his own unique universe.
After years of investigation, friend, DJ and producer Theo Parrish persuaded Ashong to let his music out of the studio, which resulted in the release of the underground smash "Flowers." It was played on dance floors everywhere and later won "Track of the Year" at the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards.
