Orlowski-Yang, who was born and raised in Staten Island, New York, became passionate about filmmaking at a young age. As the head editor of the student newspaper, The Spectator, he developed his storytelling abilities when a student at Stuyvesant High School. When Orlowski-Yang was a student at Stanford University studying anthropology, he started his journey into the field of documentary filmmaking. He joined the Extreme Ice Survey during his senior year, which was directed by environmental photographer James Balog. Chasing Ice, a ground-breaking documentary directed and produced by Orlowski-Yang, was motivated by Balog's work and the pressing need to confront climate change. The video, which documented the devastating impacts of climate change on glaciers, was widely praised and honored, winning an Emmy Award for Outstanding Nature Programming and being nominated for an Academy Award.
Orlowski-Yang established the socially conscious production firm Exposure Labs in 2009. In 2015, he produced the critically praised film Frame by Frame, which highlighted the challenges and tenacity of Afghan photojournalists in their fight for a free press. He continued to tackle significant issues in this way.
Chasing Coral, a moving examination of the catastrophic effects of climate change on coral reefs, was directed by Orlowski-Yang in 2017 as a result of his dedication to spreading awareness about environmental issues. Widespread praise and a Peabody Award were given to the movie.
