King Isis, who was born and nurtured in the vibrant cultural center of Oakland, morphs and merges music spanning from jazz and blues to rock and R&B as she journeys through suffering, development and change.
King Isis has a long family history of music. Her great-great-grandmother Omega King, one of the first Black opera singers in Chicago, taught her how to play the piano. Isis was raised in a low-income, single-mother family and as a result, she experienced emotions of inadequacy and insecurity. Isis started making her own little worlds through writing and music.
Years of rigorous classical training had stifled her, so she started to experiment with more improvisational and experimental methods. The EP's name scales is a further window into these multiplicities as well as a more direct reference to musical theory; the term also conjures up images of both actual and imagined animals as well as the idea of harmony between opposing forces.
King Isis has always had a penchant for rulebreakers, drawn to the types of individuals that go above and beyond themselves to set the model for change. This propensity for rulebreakers is a result of the power of the maternal figures in her genealogy and existence. While personally she looks to female progressives like Assata Shakur, Angela Davis and Gloria Anzaldua, sonically she gives homage to SOPHIE, Erykah Badu and Tyler the Creator..
