Joshua Eustis and Charles Cooper, two high school buddies from New Orleans, established Telefon Tel Aviv as an experimental electronic duet. Eustis and Cooper wrote the demos for Telefon Tel Aviv after years of performing in various local bands and learning the ins and outs of electronic music production. They were given an album deal after being forwarded to John Hughes III, who ran the Chicago-based Hefty Records. The remainder of that year was devoted to creating Fahrenheit Fair Enough, their self-titled first album, as well as the score for James Hughes' brother-directed film New Port South, which was also released that year.
Shaped by a wide range of influences, including Black American music (house, techno, bounce rap), British electronic music (Autechre, Aphex Twin, Jega) and British electronic music, Telefon Tel Aviv were the most recent in a long line of American musicians who sought to carve out their own niche and contribute to an expanding global discussion about what the intersection of hip-hop, soul and electronic music might be.
Charles Cooper unexpectedly passed away in the period between Immolate's publication in Germany and the United States. Cooper's passing caused the Telefon Tel Aviv project to be put on hold.
