The pop musician and lyricist May Sembera's project has been slowly developing. She was confined to her New York home studio, where she utilized Ableton to create wacky pop tunes about early 20s debauchery and the arduous days she spent touring with her old band, Poppies. These tracks were turned into her first album, Easy Bammer.
Right when New York's nightlife was waking up from its epidemic hibernation, Easy Bammer was introduced. In a trial-by-fire gig grind, May, who was prepared for the occasion, played up to three performances a week for months on end. She made friends with a bunch of like-minded up-and-coming artists during this self-recommended performance bootcamp, which she views as a creative foundation.
The title of May's latest album, French Bath, which derives its name from the deceptively opulent practice of dousing oneself in perfume to cover up an unpleasant odor, makes this creative rebirth instantly clear. May shines a mirror to the various ways we try to fill our own gaps, from the attractive models with rotten souls that stalk the streets on the sweet fantasy "NYC UMTs" to "Mr. Horny Puke Man"'s shallow indie rock lothario. She sings, "No one can fill/Up your emptiness," in the song "Getaway." May, however, empathizes with these lost souls because she has been there, rather than casting judgment.
