Cardiff, Wales-based Holding Absence is a post-hardcore quintet that creates pounding rhythm, arresting guitar riffs and massive choruses. The band released their self-titled first long-player on Sharptone and two years later, with The Greatest Mistake of My Life, it debuted on the UK charts for the first time. Before the band's third full-length album, the hard-hitting and introspective Noble Art of Self Destruction, was released, there were personnel changes.
They finally landed on a lineup that included Lucas Woodland on vocals, Feisal El-Khazragi on guitar, James Joseph on bass and Ashley Green on drums after an earlier run with former Parting Gift frontman Zac Vernon and Giorgio Cantarutti playing rhythm guitar.
Their first LP was the result of two separate recording sessions with two distinct lineups. The songs "Like a Shadow" and "Dream of Me" helped raise their fame, though, and the album received favorable reviews. The next year was fruitful in the studio and saw them produce what would ultimately become The Greatest Mistake of My Life, which eventually reached the top of the U.K. charts. The remainder of the year was spent touring the continent once more. Before releasing The Lost & the Longing, a split EP with Alpha Wolf and The Noble Art of Self Destruction, Benjamin Elliott took over on bass.
