At Yale University, Tamar Gendler holds the positions of Vincent J. Scully Professor of Philosophy, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Psychology and Cognitive Science. Her academic work, which is field shaping, combines classic Anglo-American philosophical methods with empirical study from the social sciences, including neuroscience and psychology. She is well known for her ability to accurately and entertainingly relate ancient philosophical writings to any contemporary topic, both in the classroom and on stage. She is the daughter of a rabbi and a great debater, and her delivery is kind, expressive and instructive.
Professor Gendler has amassed several outstanding accomplishments over the course of a distinguished career spanning close to three decades. She served as a professor of philosophy and the chair of the cognitive science program at her alma university for ten years after spending ten years teaching at Syracuse and Cornell Universities. She studied at Yale full-time for a year while receiving financial aid from the Mellon Foundation's New Directions program, taking courses in statistics, neurology and psychology. As the first female leader in the department's two-century history and the first Yale College alumna to lead a Yale department, she was chosen chair of the Yale philosophy department.
Before taking on her present post as Yale's first Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), she was named Deputy Provost for Humanities and Initiatives.
