The debut album, Babylon, was initially released with inconsistent success in the metal underground of the United States and portions of Europe. However, the record didn't truly take off until a year or two later, thanks to Lava Records' participation. Lava's version included freshly recorded material along with the original Howard Benson-helmed tracks and had a different cover art. It also peaked at number one on the Billboard reggae charts.
Before their eighth full-length album was released, the band signed a record contract with Earache. Smile witnessed the trio play a dazzling performance of cranked dancehall metal hits, including the hit song "Gimme That Boom.".
