He received his education at St. John's College, University of Cambridge, where he studied geography and at University College School, an independent boys' school in Hampstead. Although he was a part of the Cambridge Footlights, he spent six years working for Unilever following graduation. However, he continued doing comedy at London's Comedy Store with Steve Punt, a friend from university. He played rugby alongside Will Self at University College, as was reported in an episode of "Have I Got News For You."
Dennis was a talented impressionist who provided voices for Spitting Image and Punt as permanent backup comics on two BBC episodes that were presented by Jasper Carrott.
Later, the two graduated to a television series and went on to form half of "The Mary Whitehouse Experience" on BBC Radio 1. In addition to creating and performing The Party Line, his radio work with Punt spans more than 10 years of playing Punt and Dennis, It's Been a Bad Week and The Now Show. He co-hosts The Now Show alongside Punt, Laura Shavin, Jon Holmes, Marcus Brigstocke and Mitch Benn.
The Inventively Titled Punt and Dennis Show, as well as the comedy Me, You and Him, are just a few of the TV and radio programs on which Dennis has appeared. He has appeared as a guest host on Have I Got News For You and in the BBC comedy My Hero as the annoying GP Piers Crispin..
