Growing up in Norman, Oklahoma, Houston was initially introduced to country music through his father and uncle, who were on the road and featured in several country bands. The song "Muddy Mississippi," which can be found on Reba McEntire's eleventh studio album, was co-written by his uncle Johnny Bernard. His uncle Johnny and father Donny Bernard also toured and provided support for legendary country musicians including Tanya Tucker, Wanda Jackson and Sleepy LaBeef.
In his own songs, Houston pulls on the rich country and rockabilly musical heritage of his family by creating uplifting, approachable songs with strong voices and just the right amount of country twang to appeal to a wide range of listeners.
