Florist shows up immediately following the bend in the road. Sprague isolated herself in Los Angeles shortly after the release of the band's sophomore album, If Blue Could Be Happiness, thousands of miles away from friends and family, as well as from the physical emptiness and spiritual crises left in her wake following her mother's passing. There, she started surfing and put out Emily Alone, a solo record published under the Florist alias.
Sprague didn't come to the realization that living in a silo is not a good way to live until months of introspection and counseling. As a result, she started writing Emily Alone's companion, The Other Side of the Binary, an album that is evocative of Sprague's kind and poetic character and is full of wonder and nature.
Rick Spataro (bass, piano, synth, vocals), Felix Walworth (percussion, synth, guitar, vocals), Jonnie Baker (guitar, synth, sampling, bass, saxophone, vocals) and Sprague (guitar, synth, vocals) got together in a leased house in the Hudson Valley to live and work together throughout a hot and wet summer. The group had never recorded in that manner or for such an extended period of time.
The sounds of nature took center stage as they set up their equipment on the screened-in front porch, which overlooked a forest of trees. Next, they conducted trials. The album's recording and production methods are a direct reflection of the band's spontaneous working methods throughout that month; birds, crickets, rain, and whispering voices all highlight the instrumentation's aleatoric character.
