Mihir Chauhan and Jaiveer Singh started Baalti as a way to experiment with vintage Indian recordings and international sounds that they thought were absent from dance music. They found and developed their own distinct style over the course of several late-night crate-digging and producing sessions, focusing on a sound that was unapologetically raw, thrilling, and felt natural. The fact that they recorded the entire album in the cultural seclusion of their own bubble, with little equipment and outside influence—they were finished with the record before they even showed it to anyone—is largely responsible for their distinctive sound.
The resulting EP is a lively and experimental compilation of loosely structured groove-oriented pieces that skillfully transition between genres; you can find samples of Bengali disco, Hindustani classical music and Gujarati folk music here.
