Adwaith, a native of the Welsh town of Carmarthen, was raised in an environment that was rich in Welsh-language indie-rock and characterized by a close-knit culture of avant-garde, creative bands who often played at their favorite local venue, The Parrot. Adwaith understood they wanted to be as uncompromising in their own vision as the brazenly experimental bands that came out of Wales in the 1980s. The newer bands that Hollie Singer, Gwenllian Anthony and Heledd Owen had witnessed performing at local indie venues and Welsh-language music festivals, where they saw another new wave of performers, also had an equal influence on them when they originally set out to form their own band.
Adwaith signed to the independent label Libertino, based in Carmarthen. They then published their debut single, "Pwysau," and built on these encouraging beginnings, delving into a twisted, free-wheeling post-punk sound that brought to mind some of their inspirations, like CAN, The Breeders, and NEU! The debut album "Melyn" from that same year, which was released in a region that Westminster far too frequently overlooked and marginalized, brilliantly captured the angst and uncertainty of growing up in a volatile political environment. Along the process, the group received backing from Huw Stephens of BBC Introducing, KEXP, NPR, BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, and other prominent figures.
