Inspired equally by American folk singer Joan Baez and Arab protesting singers like Cheikh Imam and Marcel Khalifé, Emel Mathlouthi, also known as "Emel," rose to fame with her rendition of "Kelmti Horra," or "My Word is Free," during the height of the Arab Spring. The song went on to become a hymn to freedom.
Her first CD, "Kelmti Horra," was quickly released, and she took part in the first female soloist concert held at the Tehran Opera since the Iranian Revolution. She was asked to sing at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony for the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet in Oslo since she is a dedicated artist.
She recorded the foundations of a double album called "The Tunis Diaries" while visiting her childhood home in Tunis alone. The early versions of the songs featured just voice and acoustic guitar.
