Chuck Strangers received Akai's MPC2000 for his 13th birthday. It was a large workstation that was made famous by artists like J Dilla, Kanye West, and DJ Shadow. Audio interfaces used to be much less expensive than $100, so like any other teenage who is hooked with music but doesn't have the wealth of favorite performers, he spent his free time programming endless rhythms into the machine and had no idea how to really get them out. It took him four years to finally be introduced to FL Studio by a friend, but during that time, he created a great deal of art only for the enjoyment of creating, which is still a testament to his unwavering love of hip-hop despite its trials.
Overnight sensations and superstardom through sponsored promotion have become more commonplace over time, but his relationship with his art has remained process-oriented and he has always been married to both highs and unavoidable lows.
Chuck says the process started in the public high school system in New York City, where he eventually made connections with members of his previous collective, the Pro Era, which was created by Capital STEEZ. As the group's in-house producer, he created distinctively gritty soundscapes that were both evocative of the East Coast's possible future and reflective of its legacy. But as time passed and his participation with Pro Era decreased, he began working with a newer generation of New York MCs who were more interested in contemporary sounds than they were in the East Coast's yesterdays..
