The harp's function in contemporary music is being transformed by BRANDEE YOUNGER. She has dedicated the last fifteen years to pushing the limits and bounds of harpists. As the first Black woman to receive a Grammy Award nomination for Best Instrumental Composition, she created history. She was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award that year, and her most recent album, Brand New Life, won the NAACP Image Award in the Outstanding Jazz Album category. As her artistic career continues to grow, she has collaborated with well-known artists such as Christian McBride, Lauryn Hill, John Legend, Pharoah Sanders, and Common.
Brandee is sometimes credited with carrying on the tradition of the ladies who introduced the harp as a distinct and unmistakable voice in jazz and popular styles, especially Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane, who were born in Detroit. As the album's title implies, Brand New Life is about creating new artistic, personal, political, and spiritual trajectories.
