Summer Rayne Oakes got the concept that style—and how we live our lives—would be a far more effective way to link people to the natural world while she was restoring forestlands, rehabilitating mine sites, and studying sewage sludge. After earning degrees in Environmental Science and Entomology with honors from Cornell University, Oakes started tying her passion for ecological systems to businesses that have an impact on everything from our daily attire to our diet.
She has more than 20 years of expertise integrating sustainable practices and ideas into the core of the food, fashion, beauty, and horticultural sectors as a result of her journey.
She created the first online audiovisual course on houseplant growth, maintenance, and care, called Houseplant Masterclass. Since then, she has created a number of courses for people of different skill levels. Her most recent book, How to Make a Plant Love You: Cultivate Green Space in Your Home and Heart, looks at how to transform the typical potted plant from a decorative accent that adds aesthetic appeal to a room into a portal to something more profound. On iHeartPodcasts, Oakes hosted a special eight-part series podcast called Bad Seeds, which focused on the underground world of plant smuggling and the individuals attempting to preserve the rarest, most sought-after species.
Her most recent venture was the creation of Flock, a YouTube channel and creative community in the Finger Lakes of New York, with her pals. They intend to make the area more accessible to the general public for events, ecological garden tours, and horticultural, creative, and ecological residencies.
