He is an American singer-songwriter that is best known for his Western country music infused with folk and rock. In junior high school, Murphey became interested in music and began performing as an amateur. He got his first professional music performance playing around a campfire at a Texas ranch. In the early 1960’s, Murphey was performing country and folk music to clubs in Dallas, Texas. After his studies at the University of North Texas, he moved to California and studied creative writing majoring in literature and medieval history at the University California, Los Angeles. Soon thereafter, Murphey signed a publishing contract with Sparrow Music Company, which helped him make himself known in the folk music scene. Murphey’s biggest break is when he wrote the song “What Am I Doing Hangin’ Round” for The Monkees album, selling over 5 million copies. In the early 1970’s Murphey was apart of the so-called Outlaw country movement alongside artists such as, Jerry Jeff Walker and Willie Nelson. He was also the author of the New Mexico’s state ballad, The Land of Enchantment”..
