Walela is a collaboration of three amazing Native American artists. Sisters Rita and Priscilla Coolidge formed Walela in 1996. Later, Priscillas daughter Laura Satterfield was added as the third member of the group. Rita started her won music career in the 70s as a pop singer, but then during the 90s decided to come back to her Native American roots. Their music draws influences from their Cherokee heritage, but also the gospel sounds from the Deep South. They also intertwined some sounds from pop, country, folk, and soul as well. In 2002, Walela was able to perform for their biggest crowd ever, an estimated 4 billion people around the world. The group performed for the opening ceremonies for the Olympic Winter Games in Sat Lake City. The single Unbearable Love won Best Recording by a Duo or Group at the Native American Music Awards in 2001. The group is currently working on their third album. .
