Leland Melvin is an American engineer and a former NASA astronaut. He studied at the University of Richmond on a football scholarship and graduated with a Bachelors in Chemistry. From there, he went on to earn his M.S. degree in Materials Science Engineering from the University of Virginia. Melvin started his career with NASA in the Nondestructive Evaluation Sciences Branch. He then went on to lead the Vehicle Health Monitoring team before becoming an astronaut. Melvin was assigned to the Astronaut Office Space Station Operations Branch, and the Education Department at NASA Headquarters. For his job, he traveled around the country promoting science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and space exploration to teachers and students. During his time in NASA he flew two missions on the Space Shuttle Atlantis as a mission specialist on STS-122 and as a mission specialist 1 on STS-129. Since retiring, Melvin has spoken on his space experiences, his football career, and has published two books, Chasing Space: An Astronauts Story of Grit, Grace, and Second Chances and Chasing Space: Young Readers Edition..
