Over 18 million recordings by the American musician, singer, songwriter, and political activist Clyde Jackson Browne have been sold in the country. He first found success creating songs for other people in Los Angeles in the middle of the 1960s. At the age of 16, he wrote "These Days," which went on to become a small hit for the German singer and Andy Warhol protege Nico in 1967. He also co-wrote numerous songs with other Southern Californian bands the Eagles, who had their first Billboard Top 40 hit in 1972 with the song "Take It Easy," and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, of whom he was briefly a member in 1966. Browne's self-titled debut album, which yielded two Top 40 hits of his own, "Doctor, My Eyes" and "Rock Me on the Water," was released in 1972. Inspired by his success writing songs for others, Browne did so. Browne began collaborating extensively with The Section, a prolific session band that also worked with a number of other notable singer-songwriters of the day, for his debut album as well as for the following many albums and concert tours. Although "For Everyman," his second album, didn't have a hit single when it was released in 1973, it has been hailed as some of his best work and ranks highly on many "Best Album of All Time" lists. The most successful of his albums up to that moment was "Late for the Sky," which peaked at number 14 on the Billboard 200 album list. He followed this trend with his fourth album, "The Pretender," which peaked at number five on the album chart and produced the smash songs "Here Come Those Tears Again" and "The Pretender." His most well-known work, however, would be the 1977 album Running on Empty, which peaked at number three and remained there for more than a year. The songs on the album—which is both a live album and a concept album—examine issues related to life as a touring musician.
