Owen Benjamin was born Owen Smith, the son of State University of New York at Oswego professors John Kares Smith and Jean Troy-Smith. He began his career in television at the student-run station Plattsburgh State Television while attending the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. He also began performing stand-up comedy there.
